Alaskas fishing vacations are one of the most popular with tourists. With people wishing to escape the hustle-bustle of the daily life, these relaxing fishing vacations are a great way to can get closer to nature.

Salmon is common along the Alaskan coast. So is giant halibut. Visitors can also catch salmon weighing up to 50 pounds. King salmon over 50 pounds are not at all uncommon. Grayling and northern pike are easy to catch in many inland streams. Other varieties of fish, like grayling and northern pike, are easy to catch in many inland streams. And you can fish amid some of the most incredible scenery on the continent.

To be sure, its not perfect. The productivity of most Alaska streams is not high in comparison with those in warmer climes. This means that some heavily fished streams do not quickly produce many large fish, particularly in the Interior. Large salmon runs compensate in many streams, however.

The extreme tides and ocean currents surrounding Alaska creates ideal habitats for baitfish, which in turn attract returning salmon and bottom fish in astounding numbers. Alaska promotes fishing as its main sporting event. Large numbers of tourists visit the place to take part in this adventurous sport.
South-central Alaska is home to the most famous fishing areas in the state. Coastal waters and watersheds embody the place with varied land and seascapes. In addition to salmon and halibut, other fish like trout, pike, grayling, Dolly Varden, burbot, whitefish and other species can be found year-round in the many watersheds that form the main tourist attractions.

Southeast Alaska, sometimes called the “panhandle,” is a land of deep fjords, rushing mountain streams and glaciers. Much of the land is in the Tongass National Forest. Summers are cool and moist; winters are cooler and snowy, but much less cold than portions of Alaska not warmed by the ocean. Salmon return in large numbers to thousands of streams. Halibut move into near shore waters in the summer. Several species of trout are available. A variety of bottom fish can be caught. Shrimp and crab can be found in some waters.

Lower Cook Inlet is also a popular fishing destination in the summer months. Clams, halibut and salmon keep the anglers busy throughout the day. The Kuskokwim and Yukon rivers drain most of Interior, Arctic and Western Alaska, which is sparsely covered by trees. Grayling are most widespread in the region, along with trout, pike, burbot, char and shellfish.

It is advisable that first-time visitors should have a professional guide to advise them. It is always wise to visit the place as part of a guided tour, which will provide all necessary fishing equipment.

Ok, we have caught our bait and are now at or near the 100 deep area and are ready to see if any grouper are going to cooperate.

Our rig consists of a heavy snap-swivel tied directly to your main line. Make a 2-3 foot leader of 80 to 100lb mono leader and put a heavy swivel one end and a 8/0 hook on the other. Slip enough lead on the snap to keep you on the bottom, usually 12 to 20 oz depending on the wind and tide, and then slip the swivel into the snap also. Hook a baitfish up through the bottom lips out through the top, right next to the fishs nostril. Sink him down to the bottom and hold on! Sometimes it wont even hit the bottom before something nasty grabs it.

At the beginning of this article I mentioned that you want a fairly stiff rod. Well, the reason you dont really want a broom stick is it will effect the presentation of your baitfish. After you put 16 to 20 oz of lead and get to the bottom, the rod tip should be moving up and down a little bit with the contour of the bottom. This in turn makes your bait move more instead of just dragging in a straight line. Im not saying that you should use a light weight rod by any means; just dont use the stiffest rod you can find. Many times I have used a stiff rod on one side of the boat with a more flexible one on the other. Every time the flexible will catch more fish..Try it!

Most people who grouper fish prefer to anchor up on a spot. Well, we like to drift for them. I guess it is just your personal preference. I like covering more area by drifting and there is a better chance of finding a new hot spot if you are lucky enough to drift over one.

Well this should help you get started catching more grouper. Please practice catch and release whenever possible and remember the large fish dont taste any better than an average medium one. Take a picture and let the hogs go back to catch again later.

The gulf coast of Florida offers some of the best grouper fishing around. The Gulf has fairly calm water most of the year (except for our new 11 month recent hurricane season). The gear is pretty simple: a fairly stout rod, I say fairly stout because you dont want your rod too stiff because this will effect the action it has on the baitmore on this later. I use 40lb line on the reel with a 100lb shock leader, and about an 8/0 hook. I like to use live bait for grouper fishing but some prefer jigs, spoons, and even heavy grade trolling lures.

After gear, guests, and boat are ready we need to catch some bait. I like to use the junk fish that you catch when bottom fishing with smaller rigs. Blue runners, sand perch, lizard fish, etc Grouper are not real picky eaters when it comes to live bait. Yes, they do have favorites like anything else that eats, but the fish mentioned above will work great. I start my day with a piece of a large squid, about the size of you open hand is usually enough. I like to use large squid because it is tougher and stays on the hook better. Check you local fish market for availability.

We head out and stop around the 45 area and start looking for our bait. Most of the time there are no clear signs of where the bait is, you just have to keep trying till you have some luck. The bait we are looking for is holding on the bottom most of the time unless you can find some sardines in the area, then try a Sabaki rig or something similar. Cut your squid into small strips and send it to the bottom and see if any small bait fish are going cooperate with your plans. Unless you have a favorite area to catch bait, you might have to move around till you start getting bites. We usually move about 300-500 feet each move till the bait starts biting.

After you get a couple dozen baitfish in the livewell head on out to your fishing area. Ours is around the 100 foot mark and is a series of GPS marks in a 3-5 mile square area. If we dont get a bite in 20-30 minutes or so we will move on to another GPS mark in the area, (and no, I wont give you my GPS #s)sorry!

This article is continued in part II.

The Humminbird Piranha 30 portable is a great tool for any fisherman to have. The fact that it is portable makes it an ideal unit to use. Having a great, high quality fishfinder is something that every fisherman needs to have. Why? Because it cuts down on the wait and the searching and allows you to find your fish hot spot within minutes. Lets take a look at some of the features that the Piranha 30 has to offer you.

First, its portable feature is one of the best out there. Yes, the rugged portable case protects your fishfinder while you move it from place to place. This is a necessity! But, it also features a built in transducer cable wrap with cover, suction cup transducer with mount to just about anything, and its no skid bottom helps to keep it in its place. But, really, these things are only the tip of the iceberg for this fishfinder.

The Piranha 30 is a high definition unit that offers a 160V by 132 H Display. A pretty good size for a portable unit! It offers the New SmartCast advanced Remote sonar sensor. This allows for 4 level grayscale sonar, water temperature and programmable light. All that may sound good but how well does it fit with your needs?

Its going to deliver for you a clear picture with a good level of grayscale. That means clarity. It will give you information you need to find you fish like the water temperature guage. And, to allow you to fish 24 hours a day, it provides a light as well.

It offers a 20 degree single beam sonar that can reach a depth of 600 feet. It will deliver for you a clear idea of what is happening and lurking in the water below with this type of sonar. And, with this, it also allows you to use the easy One-Touch control for access to the full set of advanced features as well.

You can easily position yourself to lure in your fish. You can easily seek out the fish, no matter where he is hiding.

For a portable unit, the Piranha 30 is the ideal piece of equipment to take on any fishing adventure.

You get big screen, big color performance with a WAAS GPS-Chartplotter with Dual Frequency Sounder

The Eagle Sea Champ 1000C is a great tool. Yes, we can not say it any simpler! It offers you some of the best features in fish finding gear. You will be impressed with its precision and its high quality as well. Here, lets take a look at some of the features that makes this fishfinder something similar to the perfect tool. Here are some of the Sea Champ’s features.

You can start by checking out the Eagle Sea Champ’s awesome display. It is six inches big, just about the right size for easy viewing as you relax on your boat. It also has other features on the display that make it a good one including ultra bright for easy viewing in almost any type of light, 256 colors active matrix TFT LCD, high definition resolution and fluorescent cold cathode backlit screen and keypad. So, what does all of that give you? It delivers a clear picture that is easy to read. It gives you a picture that you can react to, meaning that you can see what type of fish are down there, the type of structure and even the size of the fish so that you can react and do what you need to, to get the big catch on board! It can be used in just about any light including at night!

Still, there is more. The Eagle Sea Champ also features some of the best in sonar. It has the capability of going 1500 feet down making it a great distance fishfinding unit. It’s technology separates fish from nearby structures or the bottom which will help you determine not just that something is there but what is there. This helps you decide if its something you should go after or not.

Still, there is much more. The GPS + WASS reception uses satellite technology to pinpoint your location to a few yards. This will help you to know where you are and where you need to go. You wont get lost if you turn around too many times. All in all, this Sea Champ will deliver for you all of the features that you need to capture the fish that you need and want!

Go home with a full cooler thanks to this awesome tool!

The Eagle Sea Finder 500C is a great fish finder. But, why, you may ask, is it a great product for you? Here are some of the features that make this 500C fish finding tool so valuable from anyone that is a beginner to anyone that is a professional. Youll love it!

First, we start with the display. The 500C offers a five inch, diagonal screen that has 256 colors, active matrix TFT LCD. What does all that translate into?

It provides excellent color and clarity in a five inch screen. That is about an average size screen but it is also a great quality screen as well. So, youll see whats down below fairly easily. It is also high definition which means that the things you do see will be recognizable. With a backlit screen and keypad, youll be able to fish day or night (great for those early morning trips on the lake!)

And, youll find that it offers a transparency feature with allows for viewing of the sonar graph through the menu displays and overlay features. In other words, you can use it anyway you would like to and get good results.

But, we have to mention some of its other features as well. With a depth level of 1500 feet, and high performance capabilities, this is a great product. It allows for an extra wide angle giving you more to see and therefore allowing for more impressive pictures. You can use this high performance sonar as well as its other abilities to decide where your fish is, to cast perfectly to the location, to lure him in with the bait and of course, to bring that fish on board.

Having the ability to do this, will make you the accomplished fisherman to say the least!

Imagine having a report telling you in advance whether you will catch any fish, before you stop the boat. With the Eagle FishEasy 2 that’s just what you have, with its clear display telling you what’s going on under your boat.

The Eagle FishEasy fish finder is the type of tool that you just need to have on board when you head out onto the lake. Its the perfect fishfinder to help you see the fish activity below your boat. Its like having inside information about where to stop and fish. It will help you to impress your friends by helping you to bring home a full cooler of fish every time you head out. Here are the Eagle FishEasy 2s features.

It all starts with the four inch display. The diagonal screen and high definition 240×160 resolution offers a good sized screen with all the details you need for success in your fish finding adventure. That is, it allows for you to have a very clear picture of what is down below. The high definition allows for a clear picture so that you can see what the sonar is bringing back to you. Having this clarity helps to improve your knowledge of where the fish are!

The sonar on board the Eagle FishEasy is good as well. You get a depth capability of 800 feet with 1500 watts of power. This depth is good for just about any average sized lake. It has a 60 degree highly sensitive fish detection capability. This means that the sonar is high quality enough to see some of the smallest of objects below and around your boat. This is helpful to know where to cast to and to know what your bait should be as well.

The other features that make the Eagle FishEasys sonar great include the technology known as FishReveal and HyperScroll. Each of these features is great. Fish Reveal allows you to see the fish hidden in the surface clutter or in the weeds at the floor.
Without this, you could miss the fish thinking there was nothing to be caught.

HyperScroll helps you adjust your setting easily to match your preferences. And, youll get Grayline which helps you to see fish that otherwise would blend into the bottom.

Each and every one of these features allows you the capability of finding your fish every time you try to. The Eagle FishEasy 2 is packed with features that will have you smiling the whole way home!

Scuba divers, when asked why they love the ocean and the beauty that thrives underneath the seas surface, would probably have varied answers. But most likely, the common reply would be that they are men of the sea. Whether there is enough logic to this kind of answer or none at all is left to the inquirer.
But scuba divers would unanimously agree and answer no when asked if they trust the ocean. Like the desert and its sands, the ocean and its waters are treacherous. They are calm and majestic now, horrible and ugly the next. But still, men of the ocean are drawn to the serenity the ocean provides. All the while embracing the fury that it can unleash on any given Sunday. And the ocean has more than storms and hurricanes on the table. It can fool the diver who underestimates it power. The more you stay in the water, Death steps nearer.
The Deep Water Blackout is a phenomenon that has taken lives of experienced and licensed scuba divers, some of whom are fitted with the right equipment and Reactor watches and all that scuba gear. Deep Water Blackout occurs when a diver loses consciousness while ascending from a deep dive, usually from 10 meters deep. Victims faint close to the surface, most of the time within the top 3 meters. Some victims even managed to break surface, only to sink again. The direct cause of the said phenomenon is the speedy drop of oxygen while ascending.
Deep water blackout, when it does not kill the diver due to drowning, also impairs the reasoning and judgment of the diver due to lack of nitrogen in the brain. The diver then experiences anxiety, fear, and loss of physical dexterity. It has been reported that divers who lost the ability to think straight while underwater swam deeper instead to the surface, thinking they are ascending. Survivors of the Deep Water Blackout had experienced hallucinations, saying they were seeing things while underwater.
Like the desert and its mirages, the ocean, too has illusions prepared for the unwary diver. Respect the ocean, love it even. But never put your trust on something that can kill you. Like the desert dunes that have buried travelers beneath its sands, the ocean, too has the cold abyss for its graveyard.
